Abiding In The Doctrine
He That Abideth In The Doctrine Of Christ Hath Both The Father And The Son (2 John 1:9)
If Jesus Christ is the Son of God, it follows that His Words should be treasured above
Shakespeare or any other mortal that has ever lived. But what is our attitude to the doctrine of
Christ?
Sinner
One of the common attitudes we observe is that of folks who transgress and refuse to abide in
the doctrine of Christ. Of these individuals, John says, they have not God-2 John 1:9. It does not
matter how good these people appear to be. Some are highly intelligent, generous, well
dressed, soft spoken, friendly but they will not even open their Bible-Matthew 7:21-23.
Saint
Another attitude that is not very common, but is correct is, to abide or remain in the doctrine of
Christ. Of these individuals, John says, they have both the Father and the Son-2 John 1:9. Both
the Father and the Son suggest two persons, not one, as some Pentecostals would have us
believe. Abiding in the doctrine is a sign of love-2 John1:6.
Sectarian
Yet, another attitude that is common is seen in the practice of going from house to house with a
different doctrine-2 John 1:10. Paul warned of the time when people would not endure sound
doctrine but turn from the truth to fables-2 Timothy 4:2 3. Many false teachers are out in the
world-1 John 4:1.
Sympathizers
Our duty is not to receive them nor bid them God-speed, for if we do so we become partakers
of their evil deeds-2 John 1:10 11. Of the four attitudes and actions presented, only one has the
blessings of Jesus. It is to abide in the doctrine 2 John 1:9, Romans 6:17, 18.
