Your Old Men Shall Dream (Joel 2:28)

Do you believe that God is speaking to you through your dreams? Many people make important decisions based on their dreams, some even believe they have scriptural support.

Meaning

Some go to Joel’s prophecy to prove that once you have the Holy Spirit, you will be guided by dreams and visions-Joel 2:28. Just as Joseph had dreams and was able to provide an inspired interpretation, there are folks today who believe that they are similarly empowered Genesis 37:5-10. A proper study of the Bible will reveal that such powers were limited to the miraculous era.

Moment

Please note that the best interpretation of a passage is an apostolic interpretation. On the Day of Pentecost, when the Lord’s church was established, Peter explained that the outpouring of the Spirit was a fulfilment of the prophecy of Joel, Joel 2:28- 32 and Acts 2:16,17. While the apostles were empowered with miraculous gifts, others had to depend on them to receive such powers-Acts 8:17, 18 Romans 1:11.

Mistake

Since the apostles have all died, there is no means by which a person can perform a miracle today. If someone has miraculous powers, they are badly needed in the present COVID 19 epidemic. Let us not be deluded into thinking that God is speaking to us except through the New Testament- Hebrews 1:1 2.

Message

Therefore, if you had a dream, do not value it above the written word-Jude 1:3. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord-Colossians 3:17. You may argue, but it is the Lord who gave me the dream. Can you prove this? It could be just a bad case of indigestion- 1Thessalonians 5:21.
