Lois and Eunice
Faith First In Thy Grandmother Lois, And Thy Mother Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5)
It is a great blessing to have a mother. It is even greater to have a grandmother working as a team
to raise a child. Such was the fortune of the young Evangelist, Timothy-2 Timothy 1:5.
Relationship
Of the various family relationship, that of mother-daughter or mother-son is indeed tight. These two
relationships are mentioned in the above passage along with grandmother-grandson. This is a good
example of the power of the extended family. One should never interpret, “leave father and mother”
to mean abandon parents-Matthew 19:5.
Reputation
Lois and Eunice were known for their faith 2Timothy 1:5. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you were
remembered for your faith? Abraham and Sarah were recognized for their faith which the Hebrew
writer explains, without faith it is impossible to please God-Hebrew 11:8-12, 6. One’s reputation will
determine your qualification to serve as elders-1Timothy 3:1-11.
Responsibility
One is not a mother simply because of pregnancy and delivery of a child. One is a mother or
grandmother when she fulfils her roles and responsibilities. In our text, Lois and Eunice ensured
that their faith was passed on to their son and grandson-2Timothy 1:5. Good parenting involves
teaching, talking, binding and writing-Deuteronomy 6:6-9. It also involves training-Proverbs 22:6 and
supervision-Proberbs 29:15.
Result
According to Paul, there was a strong correlation between good parenting and good behaviour in
children-2Timothy 1:5. Children tend to model the behaviour of their parents-Romans 2:21, 22.
When kids do not behave, parents should repent and apologise if they contributed to the bad
conduct. If parents are not at fault, they have a duty to pray for the child and continue to
demonstrate love-Luke15:20.
