The Hand That Holds The Ark

Uzza Put Forth His Hands To Hold The Ark (1Chronicles 13:9)

1 Chronicles 13 shows the shocking death of Uzza. It is a classic case of disobedience from someone who apparently had the best of intentions. Here are four fatal errors.

Presumption

In an act of gratitude King David consulted his captains and leaders about taking the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem. Earlier, the Philistines had captured the Ark, transporting it on a new cart -1Samuel 6:7-12. Now, following their example, presuming this to be okay, Uzza drove a new cart with the Ark -1Chronicles 13:7.

Innovation

Of course, all Israel should have known the proper way to transport the Ark as this was clearly explained in the law -Exodus 25:10-15. Unfortunately, many of us are fascinated by new things, hence the use of a new cart. It did not matter that the people were singing and playing instruments to God with all their might, they were doing something wrong - 1Chronicles 13:7 8.

Violation

Not only was it wrong to transport the Ark in a cart, but God made it clear that the sons of Kohath should not touch it lest they die -Numbers 4:15. God did not forbid the use of a cart, he simply told them what to do, and that was enough Numbers 7:9.

Intention

Because they failed to follow God’s instruction, their sin was revealed when the ox stumbled - 1Chronicles 13:9. In an attempt to prevent the Ark from falling, Uzza touched it and died instantly -1Chronicles 13:10. Let us learn the importance of doing God’s will. At a time when folks are finding new ways to make worship more entertaining, remember that, “the ox stumbled” -1Chronicles 13:9.
